CBS Chooses Windows Media Video 9, Microsoft’s Implementation of VC-1, the Proposed SMPTE Standard, to Power new PC-Based System
Overland Park, Kansas - Generation Technologies, Inc., announced today that CBS NEWSPATH has granted it the contract to deploy its next generation Affiliate Media/Metadata Management System. This deployment will be an integral component of CBS NEWSPATH’s new Windows PC-based system that will provide enhanced efficiency in the acquisition and redistribution of digital content to their news affiliates through the use of Windows Media Video 9, Microsoft’s implementation of VC-1, the proposed SMPTE standard.
”We are proud to continue our 25 year relationship with CBS News in such a prominent way,” said David Cunningham, President of Generation Technologies. "NEWSPATH has always been at the forefront of paradigm shifts in broadcast technology and we can’t wait to get this one deployed.”
CBS NEWSPATH operates the world’s largest satellite newsgathering organization and provides 24-hour news services to 200 CBS affiliates and to broadcasters around the world. NEWSPATH covers the worlds’ biggest events live. John Frazee, Senior Vice President, News Services, CBS News, described the decision to go with Generation Technologies: "NEWSPATH has a history of using leading-edge technology to help our affiliates and partners compete. The adoption of WMV9 (VC-1) coupled with this next-generation NEWSPATH Now system will allow us to better communicate with our stations and improve the way we deliver news to them. It will also give us another way to get news stories from our stations.”
”Generation Technologies and CBS NEWSPATH have put together a state-of-the-art system that is pushing the boundaries of innovation in newsgathering,” said Kevin Unangst, director of Windows Digital Media at Microsoft Corp. “The quality ,and efficiency improvements delivered by the Windows-based platform and WMV9 (VC-1) will give CBS NEWSPATH a competitive advantage and cost-savings in distributing content to their many affiliates.”
In addition to supporting media agnostic storage and archiving, Generation Technologies has taken the next step: affiliate-side format-agnostic recording and playback. This will permit CBS NEWSPATH to do a complete deployment of the new system while staying compatible with its existing MPEG-2 infrastructure, phasing in a transition to WMV9 (VC-1).
Making a move to a Windows PC-based infrastructure, CBS NEWSPATH will be able to cut time and costs involved with the acquisition and distribution of news stories to its many affiliates. Additionally, with the adoption of WMV9 (VC-1), CBS will benefit from the high quality compression technologies ensuring the fast and efficient delivery of this content.
Generation’s affiliate browser application will greatly simplify affiliate news clip contribution to CBS NEWSPATH by guaranteeing terrestrial IP (public or private) transport. The new system will preemptively administer embargos, metadata association, restrictions and more. The NEWSPATH browser application will give affiliates simple yet powerful means to research and quickly acquire media wherever it might reside on the NEWSPATH wide area network.
