MAG Theory: Quality

Generational Loss (Video Quality)

While most people are aware of Analog to Digital encoding loss, less emphasis is put on Digital to Digital loss. This is the loss that occurs when a piece of media is transcoded from one digital format to another.  In practice, this situation is frequently worsened by using analog composite to connect the digital equipment (D/A/D conversion). One of the primary benefits of our Affiliate Management System is the preservation of original encode all the way through our system; from contribution to distribution. This level of quality is simply not achievable in distribution only solutions. Below is a chart that compares the cumulative quality loss caused by A/D, D/A, and D/D conversion. The upper portion of the graphic is the standard semi-digital process of sharing media within a group or network. Note that in many cases, the media will sustain over 10 generations of loss before reaching it's final destination. In stark contrast, the Generation Technologies solution can edit and distribute a contribution without loss after the initial encode; never more than 2-3 generations even for long-GOP media. Quality has always been the tradeoff for implementing a digital workflow; now you can recapture the high ground.
